Default Ask your hops questions for Mr. Wizard here.

Hey, guys. I have Ashton Lewis, also known as Mr. Wizard from Brew Your Own Magazine, coming on my radio show this Sunday (he's a regular guest). We are trying something new this week, and I'd like your help.

For the first time, we're designating a specific topic of the show instead of just talking about what they have going on at Springfield Brewing Company, where he's the master brewer. We'd like to take the show to a geekier level, and this week's show is all about hops.

What I need from you are your questions about hops. We have designated this show to be specifically designated to hops, and we want to address questions that people have about them. So, ask away. I can't promise we'll get to all of them, but I'll get to as many as I can throughout the course of the show.

If you want to tune in live, the show airs Sunday at 4 pm Central time on tagsgf.com and on Ustream. It will also be available as a podcast through iTunes and on tagsgf.com on Monday. I'll try to link to it here as soon as it's available.

Please help us out and ask your hops questions.

Thanks!

Hey, thanks for the opportunity. I've noticed recently on HomeBrewTalk that there's some discussion of hops utilization as it relates to wort gravity in the boil. I know that Palmer's stood on both sides of the fence on this, most recently (a few years ago?) suggested that gravity may not affect utilization as much as we once though.
As a homebrewer, I've payed attention to this a bit, and haven't really noticed a big difference in the hoppy-ness of my beers due strictly to boil gravity. I brew both all grain and extract, and with my extract batches I use little, if any, extract in the boil. All or most is added at knockout. I've never noticed any type of difference in the hops in these extremely low gravity boils as opposed to doing the same beer with all the extract in the boil. Obviously this is anecdotal, but it's be neat to hear what a pro has to say about the subject.
