Default I have in my possession a case of Heady Topper

Vermont goodness in a can. Notice I said can. Not a fancy glass. A CAN!

My son lives in VT, he's promised me 2 4pks on his next trip down to CT. His local store was telling him a guy from CT called and wanted 2 cases put aside and he'd be up in 2-1/2hrs. LOL and they did and he left a happy man.

I just did a review of Heady Topper. That beer made me a believer in American Double IPAs. I'm not a fan of anything really hoppy, with the exception being Founders Devil Dancer and now Heady Topper. How did you land 2 cases of it?

Wasn't me, just passing a story my son told me. If you live in Vermont your chances are greatly increased.

But Heady is something very very special, actually I'm saving 2 cans to do a Pliney comparison ( waiting for that to happen). Everyone that I know that's had Heady and Pliney say the Heady wins out. Now perception and personal tastes of course play a roll but I can't wait to do a side by side blind test.

I've not had Devil Dancer, but I have had Founders Double Trouble on Tap and I must say, awesomely fine.

If you come across Firestone Walkers Union Jack or Double Jack buy it, your taste buds are already in compliance for this.

The Pliny vs Heady is similar to comparing Parabola to KBS or BCBS. Or Dark Lord to Darkness. There really isnt a winner and I dont know if i could pick a "favorite". For an IPA it will probably be based on the freshness. Both are phenomenal.

Devil Dancer is the hoppiest beer I've ever had, arguably the hoppiest on the planet. It registers at 161 IBU I believe (or maybe it was 181) but to be honest it could easily be over 200. This is the best comparison I can think of, but the smell alone made me think of very high potency ganja. I've had FW Union Jack, haven't had the chance to try the Double yet.

The human palate can only sense up to around 100 ibus. The difference is the residual sugar and flavors. Also when the hops are added. Pliny calculates out to something like 280 ibus, but definitely doesnt taste more bitter than devil dancer.

If you like Union, you will love Double Jack.

The difference is Pliny might calculate to near 300 IBUs but testing puts it around 70. Devil Dancer tests at well over 100.

I am not saying Pliny is more bitter, devil dancer is definitely one of the most bitter beers out there, just that published ibus can be skewed. even beers that test out at the same IBU level will taste different based on malts, FG, etc. High ibus doesn't necessarily mean bitter. Union jack probably tastes more bitter than Double, but probably won't test higher.
