Default New found love of berliner weiss

I am not really one for wheat beers and previously was never really fond of the berliner weiss style. Not really sure what changed but lately I have been digging them and simply cant get enough.

My future brother in law drove up from south florida the other day and brought a bottle of Funky Buddha Passion Fruit berliner weiss and not only was it delish but might have cracked my top 10 fav beers.

Does anyone else care for the style?

I like them; only complaint is they are so light. Most are in the 2-4% alcohol range, so pretty light. I do, however like the sourness the lactobacillus brings. A couple of the better ones I have had are Fritz Briem 1809 and the Bruery Hottenroth.

I just made one a couple weeks ago. 4lbs wheat malt, 4lbs pilsner, 1 oz herzbrucher, mash at 150 for 60 and no boil. Wyeast Berliner Weiss blend yeast. I tried it for the first time last night and it's sour, sour, sour..I loved it! Can't wait to drink this one! Mine's coming in at 5.2%, not to style but did this on purpose.

To say that I "care" is the understatement of the year. Im pretty much nuts for the style and have a sick fasination with berliners.

I know a lot of people complain that they are too "light" of a beer but seriously a well made berliner can be twice as complex as the biggest barleywine youve ever come across.

It brings nothing but a smile to my face to see so many breweries trying their hand at the style. 3 years ago, your options were pretty darn slim. Especially in Florida this style is spreading like wild fire and with good reason! They have the perfect climate for not only brewing them but for sessioning the hell out of them. Not only funky buddha but Pegs, Cigar City, Seventh Sun and the upcoming Wakefield brewing are ones to look for with multiple fruited variations.

I could talk about this subject till my fingers go numb from typing but ill just stop there. Cheers!
